Kelly Bielefeld, Assistant Superintendent, Clearwater School District & Adjunct Professor at Friends University, Kansas Kelly Bielefeld is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in Clearwater, Kansas and an adjunct professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. Prior to this, he spent 13 years as an elementary and middle school principal. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Kansas State University, as well as a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership & Administration from Wichita State University. As a principal, he has worked in rural, urban, and suburban schools, along with having experience in both parochial and public school settings.

The Document Camera: Beyond Science Class

Thus far, I have never met a teacher who would willingly give up their document camera. Once teachers discover how practical and useful these devices are, they don’t ever want to let them go.

Unfortunately, the core content teachers often get first dibs at this kind of technology. Elective classes already require other resources like space and supplies, so if money is tight, this technology may not be available to these teachers.

Administrators making purchasing decisions should consider all the advantages of providing document cameras in various classes. Using these devices well can allow teachers to go beyond just displaying images. Turning Educators from Tech Resistors to Tech Heroes

Imagine that you give some students the following assignment: Take a number of rubber bands and tie them to a wagon, then try to pull the wagon across a room. In order to pull the wagon, the rubber bands need to be pulled tight, but if the student pulls too hard or too fast, the rubber bands will break.

You can apply this same concept to tech-resistant educators in the classroom. If we want to move teachers from one side of the room (hating technology) to the other side of the room (tech hero), we have to “stretch” them—but not too hard or too fast.
